What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides support for Australians who are under 65 years old and have a permanent and significant disability; that is, a disability that is likely to last for your lifetime and that affects your ability to complete everyday tasks.

In Victoria, over 100 000 people benefit from participation in the NDIS — for 40 000 of those people, this is the first time they have received the support services they need. We are happy to be a small part of that here in Cranbourne.

The scheme is implemented by the National Disability Insurance Agency, who help participants develop an NDIS plan that details your personal goals, aspirations and any support you need to get you there. Participants may only require support in certain areas of their life — travel, for example, or employment and community activities — while others may need more assistance to improve the quality of their everyday lives.

As time passes, your NDIS plan will inevitably change. Having a support coordination expert on your side will allow you to allocate all your funding properly, manage what services you need (and what ones you don’t) and connect you with Cranbourne service providers.

Need Help With Your NDIS Plan?

To access the NDIS, you will need to apply to the National Disability Insurance Agency. Once accepted as a participant, you will work with the agency to come up with a plan that details your goals and the support that is needed to help you on your journey.

If you are having trouble with your NDIS application or want more information about the services and funding that will be available to you, our local area coordinator for Cranbourne will be happy to take any questions you may have.

In Cranbourne, there are many people who have different kinds of disabilities and who may or not be able to access the required equipment and facilities that they require. No matter the kind of disability that you are suffering from, the government has created the National Disability Insurance Scheme with the main aim of helping people with disabilities feel a part of the community in which they reside. It is important to ensure that you are not left out, thus the need to seek for the nearest NDIS representative in your area so that they can be able to help you with the application process. Some of the objectives of NDIS are discussed below.

The main objective is to support the independence, social and economic participation of people with disabilities. For a long period of time, people living with disabilities have been left out in many of the community activities and development hence it has created an urgent need to ensure that they are integrated in the community by involving them directly. They no longer have to feel discriminated against since through NDIS they can be able to access such activities and services without the fear of being left out. It will ensure that they feel more independent and with minimal reliance on other people unlike before its introduction.

It also aims at providing reasonable and necessary support including early childhood intervention for participants. It can be quite difficult for people with disabilities to be able to access the right kind of support even though there are many different kinds of organizations that offer them help. It can be even harder when you do not have the right funds to cater for the equipment that you need, leave alone the medical assistance that you need. Through the introduction of NDIS, you will be able to access such support and hence be able to lead a normal and better life than before.

It gives people with disabilities to have choice and control in pursuit of their goals and the planning and delivery of their supports. As a disabled person there is nothing that should keep you worried about what you will be required to do since you are going to be in control of every aspect of the support you will receive from the government. You will set your own goals; determine how you intend to achieve them and when you want to get that kind of support without having to do bulky work to be supported.

Another major objective is that it aims at facilitating the development of a nationally consistent approach to access, planning and funding of supports for people living with disabilities. Since the disabled have been ignored for a long period of time, it was found right that the government comes up with a plan that is consistent and that is going to ensure that people with disabilities are well catered for without them feeling left out in the social and economic development of the country. The introduction of NDIS is to make sure that their needs are properly taken care of without failure at all times.
